Jesus taught that we should give food to the hungry, shelter to those who have none, and clothes to the poor. When we visit the sick and those who are in prison, it is as if we were doing these things for Him instead. He promises that as we do these things, we will inherit His kingdom. (See Matthew 25:34–46.) Jesus answered, “If you want to be perfect, go, sell your possessions and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.” Jesus said, “Give, and you will receive. Your gift will return to you in full—pressed down, shaken together to make room for more, running over, and poured into your lap. The amount you give will determine the amount you get back” (Luke 6:38, NLT). What does Catholic Church say about charity ? The Catechism of the Catholic Church defines "charity" as "the theological virtue by which we love God above all things for His own sake, and our neighbor as ourselves for the love of God".

Blessed is the wealth of a Muslim from which he gives to the poor, the orphans and to needy travelers. (Or the Prophet said something similar to it) No doubt, whoever takes it illegally will be like the one who eats but is never satisfied, and his wealth will be a witness against him on the Day of Resurrection." What does Quran say about helping people? The Quran has not only endorsed helping others, but it has in fact commanded everyone to help others since Allah has helped him. Therefore, it is an obligation to do good to others. “Do Good As Allah Has Done Good to You.” We must not hoard our wealth and blessings but instead recognise that He wishes for us to be compassionate and share our provisions with others without pride:“You who believe, do not cancel out your charitable deeds with reminders and hurtful words” (Qur'an, 2:264).

Spiritual perfection is always a consideration. Therefore charity is recommended to be given at a place of pilgrimage and at lunar or solar eclipses or at the end of the month or to a qualified brähmaëa or a Vaiñëava (devotee) or in temples. Such charities should be given without any consideration of return. Bhagavad Gita chapter 17 verse 20 “From the wealth you have earned by rightful means, take out one-tenth, and as a matter of duty, give it away in charity. Dedicate your charity for the pleasure of God.” Charity is classified as proper or improper, superior or inferior, according to the factors mentioned by Shree Krishna in this verse.

The Buddha likened a person who enjoyed wealth without sharing it with others to someone digging his own grave. The Buddha also compared the person who righteously earns wealth and gives it to the needy to a person with two eyes. The stingy person was compared to someone with only one eye. What does Buddha say about the poor? The Buddha says, “Poverty is a suffering in the world for a layman.” He also says, “Woeful in the world is poverty and debt” (A. III. 350, 352). Though monks should be contented and have few wishes, poverty is never encouraged even for the monks. What does Buddhism say about helping others? Buddhism sees this desire to see others become happy as the highest, most noble aspect of the human heart. Buddhist teacher Daisaku Ikeda shares: When we look after and care for others—that is, help others draw forth their life force—our own life force increases.

Mahatma Gandhi observed “that the best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others.” In other words, placing the needs of others before your own is an important step on the journey of self-discovery. Here's what people like Gandhi actually think about the subject of charity. There are people in the world so hungry, that God cannot appear to them except in the form of bread. Gentleness, self-sacrifice and generosity are the exclusive possession of no one race or religion.
